This year portends to be an exciting and challenging period in our Country’s history.  We as Mason’s, as were our Founding Fathers, are especially endowed with the Great Light to meet the challenges that we face.  A great Masonic scholar once said of FreeMasonry,

“It is not the severely secret mysteries of it’s Society, nor is it the Structure of its formal Organization, nor is it the magnificence of its Temples.  It’s  overall mission can be summarized thus:  To seek that which is the maximum worth of the world; to exalt the dignity of every person.  And, to aid in each Man’s search within God’s Universe for his own identity.”

Freemasonry is a beautiful system of morality, veiled in allegory, and illustrated by symbols.  One of our most cherished symbols is The Common Gavel.

We are taught that the Common Gavel is an instrument made use of by Operative Masons to break off the corners of rough stones, to better to fit them for the builder’s purpose..  But we, as Free and Accepted Masons are taught to make use of it for the more noble and glorious purposes of divesting our hearts and consciences of all the vices and superfluities of life, thereby fitting our minds as living stones, for that spiritual building, “that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”

So let us each commit ourselves for this to be a year of construction; that is, to  Build Better Men for a better world, Happier Men for a happier world, and Wiser Men for a wiser world.

So Mote It Be!
